As Chincoteague prepares to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company and its world-famous Pony Swim, officials are implementing enhanced security measures to ensure the safety of attendees at this year’s events. With larger-than-usual crowds expected, organizers are urging visitors to plan ahead and allow extra time due to new screening protocols.

Chincoteague Mayor Denise Bowden announced in January that a threat had been made against the 100th anniversary Pony Penning event. The warning followed reports that ISIS-K, a regional branch of the Islamic State, had included the celebration on a list of potential U.S. targets. Appearing alongside local law enforcement during the announcement, Bowden stressed that security would be a top priority and encouraged the public to report any suspicious activity.

For the first time, security screenings will be in place at all major anniversary events, including the Pony Swim on July 30, the Pony Auction on July 31, and the Return Swim on August 1. In an effort to minimize delays and ensure safety, several items will be strictly prohibited at event sites. These include coolers, umbrellas, glass containers, bags, and backpacks.

Exceptions will be made for clear vinyl, plastic, or PVC bags; one-gallon clear plastic freezer bags (such as Ziploc); and small clutch or belt bags not exceeding 4.5 by 6.5 inches. These smaller bags may be carried separately or placed inside a clear bag. Large water bottles and thermoses are discouraged and may be subject to additional scrutiny.

All items brought into event areas will be subject to search.

While officials acknowledge the added measures may cause some inconvenience, they emphasize that public safety remains the top priority. Visitors are encouraged to review the updated guidelines in advance and come prepared.

The Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company looks forward to welcoming attendees for this historic milestone and asks for the public’s cooperation in helping make the 100th Pony Swim celebration safe and memorable.
