Onancock Welcome Sign

Onancock has a new look to greet visitors, with the installation of a town welcome sign that has been years in the making.

According to Town Manager Matt Spuck, the project began two years ago when the Town Council hired Hill Studios to design improvements in three key areas: signage, parking, and lighting. The resulting plan included designs for new streetlights, street signs, wayfinding markers, and an entry sign. After reviewing samples, budget details, and a timeline, the council approved the package.

Spuck said the welcome sign was funded entirely with American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars, meaning no local tax money was used. The council has also set aside reserves to move forward with the additional signage and lighting projects outlined in the approved budget.

Materials and labor for the sign were sourced locally. Stone was provided by Chaney, brickwork was performed by a local mason, and the sculpture of a heron taking flight was crafted by David Turner of Turner Sculptures. Spuck, who secured the information used in the council’s decision-making and serves as project manager, said the new sign marks an important first step in enhancing the town’s appearance and infrastructure.
