There are some new laws that will affect the lives of Virginians now in effect.
As of Wednesday, the minimum wage in Virginia will go from $12.00 per hour to $12.41 per hour.
Prospective jurors used to be able to request an exemption at age 70. As of Wednesday that exemption has been raised to 73 years old.
Also, colorectal cancer screenings will now be covered by health insurance with no deducibles.
Finally as of January 1, Virginia Universities will not be able to grant special treatment to those with legacy status or who are associated with or related to someone who donates to the schools.
