According to Sgt. Michelle Anaya of the Virginia State Police, an accident in Nelsonia Sunday evening resulted in the death of a Parksley woman.

At approximately 6:32 p.m., the Virginia State Police was notified of a two vehicle crash that resulted in a fatality at the 16000 block of Lankford Highway, Nelsonia, Virginia.

The Investigation reveals that a 198 Honda Civic was traveling northbound on Lankford highway (Rt.13), approximately one mile south of Nelson Road (Rt. 187). The driver ran off the roadway into the grassy median, and crossed over into the southbound lanes of travel, striking a 2014 Mercedes Benz head on.

The driver of the Honda, Shakiah Lolette Matthews, 31 years of age, of the 25000 block of Woodland Park Avenue, Parksley, Virginia, died at the scene. Ms. Matthews was not wearing her safety belt at the time of the accident, and it is unknown at this time if alcohol was a contributing factor.

The driver of the Mercedes, Michelle M. Bowser, 35 years of age, of Norfolk, Virginia, was transported to Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
