Speculation and reports have been circulating about the possible closure of various facilities at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility, but officials with the northern Accomack County installation say no final decisions have been made.
According to a statement from Jamie Adkins with the Office of Communications, NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and Wallops Flight Facility are reviewing functions and capabilities as they work to close out Fiscal Year 2025 and plan ahead.
Adkins said several options are under consideration, including the potential closure of some facilities, but emphasized that no decisions have been made. NASA stated that any changes resulting from the review will be communicated to employees, contractors, and the public in accordance with the law.
Reports have mentioned possible closures of the Visitor Center, cafeteria, and Rocket Club. The American Federation of Government Employees, the union representing federal workers, issued a strong condemnation of any closures at the base.
“The union representing federal employees at NASA Wallops Flight Facility is calling on congressional leaders, local government officials, economic stakeholders, and the public to take immediate action to stop the proposed closure of the NASA Wallops Visitor Center — a decision that, if enacted, would inflict irreparable harm on the community, the regional economy, and NASA’s public mission,” the union said in a statement.
Speculation about cuts at Wallops has been ongoing for months. Rumored reductions were spared by a House committee earlier this year, but no final determinations have been made.
