Accomack County Administrator Mike Mason told the Board of Supervisors Wednesday night that his office received numerous complaints during the evacuation period for Hurricane Florence that shelters would not allow pets. Mason said that the county is working with the school system to provide space at Nandua High School for pets during evacuations. Mason said that Nandua has space that would be suitable for pets.
Mason said that strict rules would apply which would include limits on which pets can be brought to shelters. He also said that pets must be in carriers at all times when in the shelters. Nandua has a fence enclosed outside space for pets to exercise and relieve themselves. Mason also said that pets coming to the shelter would have to have proof of vaccinations as well.
Mason said that residents of northern Accomack County and Northampton could come to Nandua with their pets if necessary.
