The National Weather Service in Wakefield says multiple coastal storm systems will impact the Eastern Shore this week, bringing periods of rain, strong northeast winds, dangerous marine conditions and the likelihood of minor to moderate tidal flooding across Accomack and Northampton counties.
Forecasters said the first coastal low begins affecting the region this morning, with rain chances increasing overnight tonight. Though rainfall totals are expected to remain under one inch through Tuesday night, winds will strengthen significantly, with gusts up to 50 mph possible along the immediate coast.
A Small Craft Advisory is in effect this afternoon for all tidal waters, escalating to a Gale Warning late tonight through Tuesday night on the seaside. Marine winds could reach 30to 40 knots, with waves as high as 7-10 feet off the seaside, 5-7 on the bayside. Chances are there will be wind restrictions on the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel.
Coastal flooding is expected to be a key impact for the Eastern Shore this week, especially during high tide cycles from Tuesday through Thursday. Widespread minor tidal flooding is likely, with localized moderate flooding possible in Northampton County Tuesday afternoon and evening. Nuisance-level flooding could persist into midweek.
A second, potentially stronger coastal storm is projected to arrive Wednesday night into Friday morning, bringing another round of rain and elevated tides. Total rainfall through Saturday is expected to range from 1 to 3 inches.
There is no tropical threat to Virginia from Category 5 Hurricane Melissa, currently in the Caribbean. However the ocean which will already be stirred up from the coastal lows may continue to be rough through the weekend.
