More arctic air arrives

Monday’s warm-up melted much of the snow, but it was short-lived as a dry cold front moved through last night, bringing a significant drop in temperatures.

Overnight lows plunged into the upper teens and 20s. Today, breezy northwest winds will usher in much colder conditions, with daytime highs struggling to reach the mid-30s and wind chills staying in the 20s. As the cold air intensifies Tuesday night, temperatures will fall further into the mid-teens to low 20s, with wind chills dropping into the single digits for most areas.

Blustery conditions will persist on Wednesday, keeping highs in the 30s and wind chills in the teens to 20s. The National Weather Service has issued a Cold Weather Advisory for Maryland and Accomack County, in effect Wednesday from 1 AM through 9 AM. Wind chills as low as 3 degrees above zero are expected across the Lower Maryland Eastern Shore, with wind chills as low as 8 degrees above zero expected across Accomack County.

Frostbite and hypothermia can occur if unprotected skin is exposed to these temperatures. Wind chill values can lead to hypothermia with prolonged exposure. If traveling outside, wear appropriate clothing, including a hat and gloves.

Although winds are expected to ease by Wednesday night, the lingering cold air will likely result in lows in the low to mid-teens.

By Thursday, temperatures will begin to moderate, climbing into the 40s by the end of the week and potentially nearing 50°F over the weekend. However, another surge of Arctic air could arrive early next week, reinforcing the cold weather pattern. Residents should prepare for frigid conditions, especially Tuesday night into Wednesday, when the cold will be at its peak.
