The Mary N. Smith Alumni Association hosted its 2nd Annual STEAM Community Day at the Cultural Enrichment Center, bringing together families, students, and community partners for a day of discovery and innovation.
The event opened with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) STEM Mobile Lab and the Accomack County Public Schools Book Mobile, setting the stage for a variety of hands-on activities. Participants engaged in coding and programming, built lava lamps and squishy circuits, tested underwater drones, created tree ring necklaces, completed math challenges, made butter, and explored pharmaceutical science.
Local partners played a key role, including UMES, Eastern Shore Community College, Accomack County 4-H Extension, Boys & Girls Club Eastern Shore Unit, Earth Systems Management, Eastern Shore Master Naturalists, Eastern Shore Rural Health Systems, Eastern Shore Rail Trail, Eastern Shore Regional Public Library, Girl Scouts of the Chesapeake Bay, The Nature Conservancy, and WHRO.
Food and entertainment were provided by MTM Catering and DJ Set-it-Off, adding to the community atmosphere. Organizers credited the success of the event to sponsors In Touch Academy, Beyond Numbers Consulting, and the student volunteers from Nandua High School and Broadwater Academy, along with the support of all attendees.
