Eastern Shore residents noticed the mail was very light on Monday. According to unofficial sources the reason many got little if any mail Monday was that there was a mercury spill at the Church Street handling center in Norfolk Saturday.  According to WAVY TV the spill occurred when a package containing mercury developed a leak.

Rep. Scott Taylor (R-Va.) said in a tweet Monday he was “glad to hear the employees are safe and accounted for.” The congressman added his office was informed that the post office would not be suspending mail delivery.

While post office officials said there would be no disruption in service, there apparently was on Monday.

Local Post Offices received an email Monday afternoon stating that service will be fully resumed on Tuesday and Tuesday’s mail should contain mail that was held up over the weekend.
