Scammers are once again targeting local citizens, according to our local Social Security Administration Office in Accomac.

Many local residents have reported getting scam calls which claim their Social Security number has been suspended for suspicion of illegal activity. The message sounds like this:

Often times, the scammers even spoof SSA’s main customer-service telephone number on caller ID.

The Social Security Administration will never threaten you for information or promise benefits in exchange for information. In those cases, the call is fraudulent. If you receive a call like this, you are encouraged to hang up immediately. Do not give any information.

If you suspect you’ve been contacted by an SSA scammer call the Social Security Fraud Hotline at 1-800-269-0271.
