Snowfall prediction

Local emergency management officials are urging residents to prepare for a significant winter storm expected to impact the region Wednesday and Thursday. The system could bring 6-12 inches of snow to Accomack and Northampton counties, along with strong winds that may cause blowing and drifting snow.

Officials from both counties and the Town of Chincoteague are advising residents to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary during the storm. They’re also requesting that residents reserve 911 calls for true emergencies to allow first responders to focus on critical situations.

Residents are being encouraged to prepare emergency kits before the storm’s arrival, with supplies to last at least three days. Essential items should include one gallon of water per person per day, non-perishable food, blankets, first aid supplies, medications, and battery-operated radios. Additional considerations include non-electric can openers, toiletries, and special items for infants, elderly, or disabled family members. Those with landline phones are advised to keep a corded telephone on hand in case of power outages.
