Winter Storm Watches remain in effect for Accomack and Northampton counties as confidence continues to increase that a major winter storm will impact Virginia’s Eastern Shore this weekend, according to the latest forecast update from the National Weather Service.

Forecasters say the most notable change in the outlook is increasing confidence that the Eastern Shore will see snow develop Saturday evening, transitioning to a wintry mix Sunday morning before changing to mostly rain as warmer air moves in. While forecasts show ice as a major concern on the western Shore, current models do not indicate ice accumulation on our side of the bay. Projections continue to support snowfall totals of up to six inches in Accomack County and four to five inches in Northampton County, though totals have trended slightly lower compared to earlier forecasts.

Forecasters note that while mixed precipitation may occur farther west and south of the Shore, the latest guidance keeps Accomack and Northampton counties fully on the cold side of the storm, reducing concerns for sleet or freezing rain locally. However, snowfall could still lead to hazardous travel conditions, particularly during periods of heavier snow.

Another major concern highlighted in the update is the prolonged stretch of extreme cold expected after the storm exits. Temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing for several days, possibly into the middle of next week. Overnight lows could fall into the single digits, with wind chills even colder. Officials warn that lingering snow combined with bitter cold could extend impacts well beyond the weekend.

Residents of Accomack and Northampton counties are urged to prepare now by planning for potential travel disruptions, ensuring heating systems are functioning properly, and checking on pets and vulnerable neighbors. Forecasters emphasize that while confidence is increasing, snowfall amounts and timing may still shift, and residents should continue to monitor official forecast updates as the weekend approaches.
