Science, technology, engineering, agriculture/arts, and mathematics (STEAM) took center stage on Saturday as the Mary N. Smith Alumni Association hosted its inaugural STEAM Community Day. The event, held at the association’s community center, offered a dynamic array of hands-on experiences, interactive displays, and educational activities designed to ignite curiosity and enthusiasm for these critical fields.
The day brought together local organizations, educational institutions, and community groups to provide engaging learning opportunities for attendees of all ages. Participants had the chance to explore a wide range of STEAM-related topics through interactive exhibits and activities, from environmental conservation to robotics, engineering challenges, and agricultural innovation.
“We are thrilled to have hosted such a successful event,” said a representative from the Mary N. Smith Alumni Association. “The response from the community has been overwhelmingly positive, and we are grateful to all the organizations that helped make this day possible.”
The event received support from a diverse group of community partners, including WHRO, The Nature Conservancy, the Eastern Shore Soil and Water Conservation District, the Eastern Shore YMCA, University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) Extension, and UMES departments such as Business, Management, Accounting, and Pharmacy, as well as several local schools and organizations. Notable contributors also included Earth Management Systems, Classical Conversations Homeschool, Eastern Shore Community College, the Accomack County Public Schools STEM program, and the Boys and Girls Club-Eastern Shore Unit.
Participants were treated to everything from environmental workshops led by The Nature Conservancy to interactive STEM activities hosted by UMES students and faculty. The Eastern Shore YMCA and Eastern Shore Rail Trail offered exciting opportunities to connect physical activity with science, while local vendors like MTM Catering and DJ Set It Off provided food and entertainment for the day.
“This event truly showcased the power of collaboration in our community,” said one organizer. “By bringing together so many different organizations and resources, we’ve created an opportunity for lifelong learning, exploration, and fun.”
The Mary N. Smith Alumni Association extended its heartfelt thanks to all who participated and made the inaugural STEAM Community Day a memorable and impactful event.
