A high speed chase Tuesday evening ended in Cape Charles with a large manhunt for the driver of the vehicle.
Reports of the chase came in around approximately 6:30 PM on Route 13 southbound in Cheriton. According to Lt. Rob Stubbs with the Eastville Police Department, pursuit started in Eastville, with Eastville Officer Owens attempting to stop the vehicle. The suspect was traveling at a very high rate of speed. Officer Owens lost the vehicle, which had turned off of Route 13 and headed into Cape Charles on Parson’s Circle. Cape Charles Police Department spotted the vehicle and chased it down Mason Avenue and Bay Avenue before it turned towards the town park. The vehicle drove through the park. Cape Charles PD was able to crash the suspect vehicle into a tree at the park.
The driver fled on foot and is currently the subject of the manhunt. According to a Facebook post from Cape Charles Mayor Adam Charney, police were searching for a black male, approximately 6’2″, wearing a white tank top that was part of a crime scene in Cape Charles Central Park on Plum Street. Mayor Charney clarified in a later post there had been no shooting in town, only a manhunt being conducted with dogs and drones. The suspect is still at large.
There were three other passengers in the car. Lt. Stubbs said they have not been charged with any crimes. The Accomack County Sheriff’s Department K-9 Unit assisted.
