The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory in effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. EDT on Thursday for the Eastern Shore.
Forecasters warn that heat index values could climb as high as 107 degrees, creating potentially dangerous conditions for residents and outdoor workers.
The combination of high temperatures and humidity significantly increases the risk of heat-related illnesses, including heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Health officials urge the public to take necessary precautions:
Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
Remain indoors in air-conditioned spaces when possible.
Avoid direct sunlight and limit outdoor activities during peak heat hours.
Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
Check on elderly family members and neighbors, who are especially vulnerable to extreme heat.
Anyone who must be outside is encouraged to schedule strenuous activities during the early morning or evening hours and to take frequent breaks in the shade or a cool environment.
Residents are advised to stay alert to signs of heat exhaustion, such as dizziness, nausea, and excessive sweating. Seek immediate medical attention if symptoms of heat stroke occur, including confusion, rapid pulse, and loss of consciousness.
