Heat Advisory, Extreme Heat Watch Issued for Eastern Shore

The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Heat Advisory for Accomack and Northampton counties from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. today.

Forecasters say heat index values could reach up to 107 degrees as hot temperatures combine with high humidity.

An Extreme Heat Watch also remains in effect for Accomack and Northampton counties from Friday morning through Friday evening. During that period, dangerously hot conditions are possible, with heat index values of 110 degrees or greater.

The Weather Service says heat-related illnesses increase significantly during extreme heat and high humidity events.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, avoid prolonged time in the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors.

Officials also remind the public never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. Temperatures inside a vehicle can become deadly within minutes.

The Heat Advisory remains in effect through 8 p.m. today, while the Extreme Heat Watch is in effect Friday.
