The General Assembly unanimously voted to select Matthew Haynes to be the new General District Court Judge for Accomack and Northampton County on Wednesday.

Haynes is an Eastern Shore native, but has practiced law in Richmond for several years.

“I am humbled and grateful for the General Assembly’s unanimous confirmation of my appointment,” said Haynes. “I am committed to serving as a judge with fairness, impartiality and respect for all who appear before me.”

At an interview with the General Assembly on Tuesday, Haynes told a panel when the seat became open following the retirement of Judge Gordon Vincent he saw an opportunity to return home and put the skill set he had learned through 25 years of practicing law in Richmond to work serving the community that raised him.

Haynes will begin adjudicating on April 1.
