Governor Glenn Youngkin announced that 35 preservation projects across Virginia have been awarded grant funding through the Virginia 250 Preservation Fund, a program established to support historic sites and museums anticipating increased visitation in 2026 during the nation’s 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. Four Eastern Shore projects will receive funding for critical capital improvements, ensuring the preservation and accessibility of these treasured landmarks on the Eastern Shore.

The Virginia 250 Preservation Fund, created as part of the Commonwealth’s 2024-2026 Biennial Budget, aims to invest in historic properties and enhance visitor experiences leading up to the Semiquincentennial. The fund is administered by the Department of Historic Resources (DHR) and has allocated nearly $20 million in grants to 35 projects following a rigorous application process.

Eastern Shore Projects Awarded Funding

  • Eastern Shore of VA Historical Society was awarded $112,500.00 to support the stabilization and restoration of Kerr Place, ensuring it remains a cornerstone of local history for generations to come. $54,000 was also awarded for a new roof for the Hopkins & Brothers Building at the Onancock Wharf. The project involves replacing a roof of a historical building that now includes a museum and restaurant, preparing the Eastern Shore for Sail250 visitors.
  • Cape Charles Rosenwald School Rehabilitation. $600,000 was awarded to complete construction and installing exhibits at a recently-stabilized historic African-American school.
  • Accomack County 1783 Jailer’s Residence/1824 Debtor’s Prison Restoration. $350,000 will fund critical repairs to historic interior and exterior features, such as plaster and masonry, and modernizing electrical and security systems which will all allow the building to begin to welcome the visiting public.

Governor Youngkin highlighted the importance of these investments, stating, “As the United States of America prepares to celebrate its 250th birthday in 2026, there is no better time to show the world the essential role that Virginia has played in our Nation’s founding. These investments in historic properties will allow them to showcase their significant cultural value, preserving them for future generations.”

DHR Director Julie Langan emphasized the lasting impact of the funded projects. “The capital improvements made possible through these grants will enhance the experience of thousands of visitors for whom Virginia will be a priority travel destination during 2026. These investments will benefit Virginia for many years to come,” she said.

“I’m happy we secured funding for these important projects,” said Delegate Rob Bloxom. “The Eastern Shore has a rich heritage, and it’s gratifying to see financial support for preserving these historic treasures through needed renovations.”

The selection process prioritized properties listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register, the National Register of Historic Places, or designated as National Historic Landmarks. Many projects also include enhancements to accessibility, helping sites serve a diverse range of visitors. Following project completion, these sites will not only preserve history but also contribute to their communities as venues for events and cultural gatherings.

Grantees are required to match at least one-third of the state award with additional funding or in-kind services. Over the course of 2025 and 2026, DHR staff will monitor progress through site visits and project reviews.
