Dr. Dick Jenkins

Eastern Shore Community College has announced the passing of former president Dr. Richard Jenkins, who served as the institution’s second president from 1996 until his retirement in 2006.

Dr. Jenkins began his career on the Shore in 1968 as an assistant professor of history at the Eastern Shore Branch of the University of Virginia, which later became Eastern Shore Community College. In 1971–72, he served as acting dean of student services before being named dean of student services the following year, a role he held for about 25 years.

In February 1996, Dr. Jenkins succeeded Dr. John Fiege as president of ESCC. His tenure was marked by enrollment growth and the creation of the ESCC Foundation, as well as the development and construction of the Workforce Development Building. He retired in 2006 after 38 years of service with the Commonwealth of Virginia.

Following retirement, Jenkins remained active with civic organizations and was a strong supporter of Camp Occohannock on the Bay. He also maintained close ties with ESCC, attending the groundbreaking of the new Academic Building in 2017 and the college’s 50th anniversary celebration in 2021.

Dr. Jenkins earned his bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and his master’s and doctoral degrees from the University of Virginia.

Current ESCC President Dr. Daryl Minus issued a statement offering condolences to Dr. Jenkins’ family, friends, and colleagues.

“We offer our sincere condolences to Dr. Jenkins’ family, friends, and colleagues.”
