A former Accomack County deputy, who was reportedly fired, was charged with assault and battery earlier this month in Accomack General District Court in connection with an incident that occurred in October and involved an Accomack Jail inmate.
Court records accuse 35-year-old Luke Arnold of the Onancock area of the misdemeanor. Sgt. Joshua Marsh, of the Accomack County Sheriff’s Office, filed the complaint.
Arnold is reportedly accused of pushing a handcuffed and leg-shackled inmate, which caused him to fall. The former deputy is alleged to have slammed the man into a wall and grabbed the back of his neck and his face. Videos were made of the incident.
Accomack County Sheriff Todd Wessells fired Arnold the next day and then referred the case to Commonwealth’s Attorney Spencer Morgan for criminal prosecution. Morgan has referred the case to Northampton Commonwealth’s Attorney Jack Thornton.
The case is scheduled to go before a district court judge on March 23.
