For the third time since June, Accomack County firefighters responded on Thursday morning to a massive grease fire behind the Perdue Farms Inc. processing plant in Accomac.
Accomack County Public Safety Director Charles R. Pruitt said all three blazes were connected to the demolition of an old rendering facility.
Fires there last June and November were inside old storage tanks, but Thursday’s blaze happened when residue inside an old building ignited during demolition.
“The incident did not interrupt plant operations and our site team worked with fire officials to contain and resolve the issue quickly and as safely as possible,” said Joey Shevlin, director of corporate communications for Perdue Farms.
The fire was reported at the Valley Proteins Inc. facility on the grounds of the Perdue plant.
Units and personnel from Parksley, Tasley, Onancock, Melfa, Wachapreague, Bloxom, Painter and the Accomack County Department of Public Safety responded to the 10:10 a.m. alarm.
