Flood Watch Issued for Accomack and Northampton Counties

The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Flood Watch for Accomack and Northampton counties from 1 p.m. Tuesday through Tuesday evening.

Forecasters say numerous showers and thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon and continue into the early evening. Rainfall rates could exceed two inches per hour at times, with localized totals of three to five inches possible in a few spots.

The Weather Service says excessive runoff could lead to flooding in low-lying and flood-prone locations, as well as areas with poor drainage. While recent conditions have been dry across the Eastern Shore, forecasters say rainfall of this intensity could still be enough to cause flooding where storms repeatedly move over the same areas.

Residents are urged to monitor later forecasts and be alert for possible Flood Warnings. Those living in areas prone to flooding should be prepared to take action if flooding develops.
