The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued a Flash Flood Warning for south central Accomack County, which has been extended to include Exmore, effective until 12:45 p.m.

At 7:39 a.m., emergency management officials reported cars trapped in high water after heavy rainfall in the area.

4.8 inches of rain reportedly fell in three hours in Exmore with more than 10 total reported in 24 hours in Accomac. An additional half to one and a half inches is possible. Flash flooding is ongoing.

Forecasters warn of flooding in small creeks and streams, as well as on highways, streets, underpasses, and other low-lying or poorly drained areas. Communities at risk include Onley, Accomac, Melfa, Wachapreague, Painter, Keller, Locustville, Tasley, Quinby, Exmore and Willis Wharf.

Residents are urged not to drive through flooded roads. The Weather Service reminds drivers that most flood-related deaths occur in vehicles. Flooding can be reported by calling 757-899-2415, posting on the NWS Wakefield Facebook page, or through X at @NWSWakefieldVA.
