Firefly Aerospace is set to broaden its launch capabilities by initiating Alpha rocket missions from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) at Wallops Island as early as 2026. The expansion aims to alleviate congestion at existing launch sites in California and Florida while capitalizing on Wallops’ growing infrastructure and strategic location.

The company, which has so far conducted all Alpha rocket launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California, announced plans in June 2024 to establish launch operations both at Wallops Island and at Esrange Space Centre in Sweden. Firefly’s Vice President of Launch Vehicles, Adam Oakes, reaffirmed these plans at the annual Global Spaceport Alliance meeting on January 27, citing the need for more flexibility and less dependence on heavily booked launch facilities.

“There is a traffic jam, and basic things like the weather are going to be the biggest holdup,” Oakes noted regarding launch operations at Vandenberg and Cape Canaveral. He emphasized that adding Wallops Island as a launch site provides critical relief from the bottleneck and enables Firefly to execute missions on a more consistent schedule.

Firefly plans to launch its first Alpha mission from Wallops in Q1 2026. Wallops’ infrastructure and access to polar orbits make it an ideal site. The company will conduct five Alpha launches from Vandenberg in 2025 before incorporating Wallops and Esrange in 2026.

With the expansion, Firefly aims to increase its launch frequency and enhance reliability.

Wallops has benefitted in the booming space industry as other pads have become crowded. As the industry matures, Wallops Island would become a vital hub for commercial space activity, complementing existing missions launched from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport.
