Extreme Heat Watch issued for Accomack and Northampton Counties

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Watch for Accomack and Northampton counties from Friday morning through Friday evening.

Forecasters say dangerously hot conditions are possible, with heat index values reaching up to 110 degrees. Mecklenburg County is also included in the watch.

Heat-related illnesses can increase significantly during periods of extreme heat and high humidity, especially for older adults, young children, people with health conditions, outdoor workers, and those without reliable access to air conditioning.

Residents are urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in air-conditioned spaces when possible, avoid prolonged time in the sun, and check on relatives and neighbors.

Officials also remind the public never to leave children or pets unattended in vehicles. Temperatures inside a vehicle can become deadly within minutes.

The watch remains in effect from Friday morning through Friday evening.
