If an evacuation order is issued during a hurricane threat, residents have several options. It is not always necessary to leave the Eastern Shore entirely — the central and higher-elevation areas of the Shore can offer safer locations to ride out the storm. However, some people may choose to travel to other areas until the danger passes.
The best choice is often to stay with relatives or friends on higher ground. This frees up space in public shelters for those who have no other options. Motels may also be an option, but they can fill quickly.
Public Shelters
For those who need them, public shelters will be available.
- Accomack County: Arcadia High School and Nandua High School are the primary shelters.
- Northampton County: Northampton Middle School (anticipated to be available)
If you plan to use a public shelter, bring bedding, snacks, medications, and entertainment such as books or games for both adults and children. Keep in mind that internet and cell service service may be interupted during the storm, so do not rely solely on it for communication or entertainment.
As a general rule, pets are not allowed in public shelters.
Sarah Dickey of the Accomack Deprtment of Emergency Services said, “in the case of an evacuation/opening shelters, we will strongly suggest that residents, especially with pets, seek shelter with family or friends outside of the area in danger. Shelters are for last resort only and less than comfortable for both residents and animals, but are a safe refuge if necessary. Nandua High School does have supplies to supplement the care of pets and dogs if we do need to shelter pets (although we require owners to bring a crate, food, medicine, records, etc.), and would most likely be designated as the pet shelter for cats and dogs only. But this isn’t always standardized, and can be up to the judgement of the Unified Command.”
Some churches may also open their doors to those in need. Stay tuned to WESR before, during, and after the storm for up to the minute updates.
