The Eastern Shore of Virginia Broadband Authority (ESVBA) is hoping to complete universal fiber-to-home coverage of the Eastern Shore.
The ESVBA has announced its intent to apply for funding through the federal Broadband Equity Access and Deployment (BEAD) Program, administered by the Virginia Department of Housing & Community Development (DHCD). This “once-in-a-generation” grant aims to deliver broadband access to all communities and homes nationwide.
The ESVBA received a Letter of Support from the Northampton County Board of Supervisors at Tuesday night’s monthly board meeting to bolster its application. The funding would allow the authority to complete broadband coverage for the remaining unserved homes in Northampton County, ensuring equitable access to high-speed internet across the region.
Since its formation through a joint resolution by Accomack and Northampton Counties, the ESVBA has provided broadband to nearly 80% of the Eastern Shore. The authority has supported residents, small businesses, and major organizations, positioning the region as a leader in telecommunications. The ESVBA has demonstrated its commitment through successful stewardship of resources, including securing a $15.6 million grant through the VATI program and administering funds from Northampton County.
