Tropical Storm Ernesto is far away in the Atlantic Ocean and is not expected to have much effect on our weather as it moves northward near Bermuda this weekend.
However, Ernesto, which is predicted to become a Category 3 hurricane by the weekend, could stir up the Atlantic Ocean as it passes by and disrupt beach and off shore fishing plans.
Waves are expected to increase from 3 ft. Thursday to the 6 to 8 ft range over the weekend and into Monday. Strong rip currents will also create danger for swimmers during that period.
Anyone who wishes to go swimming in the ocean should not go to the barrier islands. The only ocean beaches on the Eastern Shore of Virginia with life guard protection are Assateague and Ocean City. Even with life guard protection, swimming in such conditions should be avoided.
