Eastville saw two retirements on June 30, both timed with the end of the fiscal year.

Mayor Jim Sturgis officially stepped down from his role, citing a desire to retire from both business and public life in order to care for family.

Town Manager Kevin Doughty confirmed that David Eder, the town’s retired Town Manager, also resigned from his position of interim Police Chief on the same day.

According to the Eastville Town Charter, a vacancy in the office of Mayor shall be filled for the unexpired portion of the term by a majority vote of the Town Council; the person so elected to fill the vacancy must be a qualified voter and resident of the town, which was Elenor Gordon.

Sturgis succeeded his father when he ran unopposed for the position in 2010. His father had served as Eastville Mayor for 40 years.
