The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued multiple advisories for the Eastern Shore and surrounding areas as a coastal low brings heavy rain, strong winds, and tidal flooding to the region through midweek.
According to the Monday afternoon impact weather briefing, one to two inches of rain are expected across the Shore from Monday through Tuesday night, with localized totals up to three inches possible. Showers are likely to linger into Thursday.
Tidal flooding is a growing concern. A Coastal Flood Warning has been issued. Shallow flooding is expected in the most vulnerable locations near the waterfront and shoreline resulting in a low threat of property damage. Expect up to one foot of water above ground level in low lying, vulnerable areas. Some roads and low lying property including parking lots, parks and lawns near the waterfront will experience shallow flooding. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.
A Wind Advisory is also in place for coastal portions of the Eastern Shore, with northeast winds of 25 to 30 knots and frequent gusts up to 35 to 40 knots. Marine conditions will be hazardous, and occasional gusts of 40 to 45 knots are possible south of Cape Charles. Gale Warnings are in effect for all coastal waters, the lower Chesapeake Bay, the James River south of Windmill Point, and the Currituck Sound.
High surf is also expected, with advisories issued for Virginia and North Carolina beaches. Rough surf and strong northeast winds may result in beach and dune erosion.
