The Eastern Shore is getting a much-needed break after nearly two days of heavy rainfall that caused flooding across parts of the region.
The slow-moving storm system has now shifted south into northeastern North Carolina, allowing floodwaters on the Shore time to recede. Over the past 48 hours, much of Accomack County received more than six inches of rain. Around Exmore, totals topped four inches, while lower Northampton County recorded between one and two inches.
Only scattered showers are expected today, with cooler temperatures remaining below 80 degrees. Flood warnings for both Accomack and Northampton counties expired at midnight Thursday.
The soaking rains also brought welcome relief from the area’s persistent drought. The U.S. Drought Monitor has improved conditions from extreme drought to abnormally dry. Despite the improvement, much of the Eastern Shore remains one to three inches below normal rainfall for the year.
Forecasters say the next chance for rain is expected on Tuesday.
