Eastern Shore Chamber celebrates 72 years of service with sold-out Annual Dinner

The Eastern Shore of Virginia Chamber of Commerce marked its 72nd anniversary with a sold-out annual dinner on Wednesday, June 25, held at the Eastern Shore Yacht and Country Club. The evening brought together local business leaders, community members, and elected officials to celebrate accomplishments, welcome new leadership, and recognize outstanding contributions to the region.

Chamber Executive Director Robert Sabbatini opened the event by thanking the Board of Directors for their ongoing dedication. “The Board of Directors’ leadership and guidance has been invaluable,” he said. Chair Jennifer Annis officially swore in new board members Patty Kellam and Will Russell, while Sandra Johnson recognized outgoing members Jim Schaeffer, Debbie Cooley, and J.T. Holland for their service.

Among the evening’s highlights was the presentation of the 2025 Chairman’s Award to Rhonda Marsh, praised for her instrumental role in organizing successful Chamber events and raising more than $450,000 in sponsorships. “Her love for the Chamber and our community shines through,” said Annis.

Sabbatini himself received the Distinguished Service Award for his tireless efforts since taking the helm in 2021. Under his leadership, Chamber membership has grown to nearly 550. Annis described him as “tireless, creative, and hands-on,” noting his commitment to both strategic goals and day-to-day operations.

The 2025 Citizen of the Year Award was presented to John Coker by Ace Seybolt. Coker, a member of the Northampton County Board of Supervisors since 2017, was recognized for his businesslike approach and advocacy for strong inter-county cooperation and regional development.

Kelly Flores of Mama Judith’s Food Truck received the 2025 Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award. At just 22, Flores launched her business to lift her family out of poverty, naming the venture in honor of her late grandmother. Sabbatini called her a “first-generation businesswoman driven by love, resilience, and the legacy of strong women.”

The Corner Bakery of Onancock—led by Connie Smith, Pete Smith, Pete Smith Jr., and Karen Edwards—was honored as the 2025 Small Business of the Year. Annis described the bakery as “extraordinary,” lauding both its products and its support of local nonprofits and events across the Shore.

Frank “Jay” Abella was named Volunteer of the Year for his involvement with Cape Charles Main Street, the ESVA Tourism Commission, and the Chamber. Seybolt said Abella has “made his mark” since arriving on the Shore and is expected to take on even more roles in the future.

Eastern Shore Rural Health was named Non-Profit of the Year. Accepting on behalf of the organization, CEO Jeannette Edwards highlighted its growth since 1976, now employing 370 staff, including medical, dental, behavioral health, and pharmacy professionals. “The importance of Eastern Shore Rural Health to the community cannot be overstated,” said Sabbatini.
