As communities across the country mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, the Eastern Shore is preparing to welcome visitors for a unique maritime celebration.

The historic waterfront town of Onancock will host “Onancock Sails Forward,” bringing the tall ship Lady Maryland to the harbor as part of Sail Virginia 2026. The event will feature a weekend of maritime history, dockside tours, and waterfront entertainment.

The Onancock Marina has been designated an official Affiliate Harbor in the statewide Sail 250 network, coordinated by Festevents and the Virginia American Revolution 250 Commission. While the largest gathering of tall ships will take place in Norfolk, organizers say Onancock offers visitors a more intimate opportunity to step aboard a tall ship, meet crew members, and experience maritime heritage up close.

Activities will include tours of the Lady Maryland, live music, performances, art and craft vendors, maritime demonstrations, and family-friendly events throughout the waterfront and historic downtown district.

Visitors are also encouraged to explore more of Virginia’s Eastern Shore during the celebration. The Sail 250 festivities continue the following weekend in nearby Cape Charles with SailFest Cape Charles, scheduled for June 19th through the 21st. Between events, travelers can visit barrier island beaches, paddle coastal waterways, tour historic towns, and enjoy fresh Chesapeake Bay seafood.
