Early voting for August 4 Democratic Primary begins Thursday

A crowded Democratic field is taking shape in Virginia’s Second Congressional District ahead of next year’s primary election.

The district includes Virginia Beach, parts of Chesapeake, Suffolk, Franklin, Isle of Wight County, and Virginia’s Eastern Shore, including Accomack and Northampton counties.

Early voting is set to begin in both Accomack and Northampton Counties Thursday. Early votes can be cast at the Voter Registrar’s offices in both counties during regular business hours  beginning Thursday. A new feature beginning with this primary election is Sunday in person voting.  Registrars offices will be manned on Sunday July 19 and Sunday July 26.

Among the candidates seeking the Democratic nomination is former Congresswoman Elaine Luria, who represented the district from 2019 to 2023 and is now looking to reclaim the seat currently held by Republican Congresswoman Jen Kiggans.

Also running are physician and former attorney Nila Devanath, former U.S. Agency for International Development official Patrick Mosolf.

Virginia’s congressional primary elections are scheduled for August 4th, 2026. The Democratic nominee will advance to the general election to face incumbent Republican Jen Kiggans in one of the Commonwealth’s most closely watched congressional races.
