Dr. David Jones named Riverside’s Provider of the Year

In March 2026, the Riverside Foundation’s RemarkaBall formal gala will celebrate two individuals whose leadership, service and unwavering commitment have shaped the health and well-being of our communities.  The Foundation announces Alan Witt as its 2025 Citizen of the Year, and Dr. David Fitzgerald Jones as its 2025 Provider of the Year.

2025 Provider of the Year

The Riverside Foundation proudly recognizes a physician whose leadership, compassion and commitment to community care have shaped the lives of countless patients and families.

A board-certified specialist in internal medicine, pulmonary disease and critical care, Jones has served patients on the Eastern Shore of Virginia for more than 30 years.  After completing medical school at the University of Virginia, followed by residency and fellowship training at Wake Forest University, Jones returned to his native Eastern Shore, bringing a deep understanding of the people and the place he calls home.

Beyond his clinical practice, Jones serves as Chief Medical Officer of Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital and is committed to advancing health care access and outcomes in his community.  He has earned the admiration of his peers, who elected him to serve as President of the Riverside Medical Group Board.  In this role, he champions excellence across more than 850 providers, guiding Riverside Health’s mission with integrity, expertise and a collaborative spirit.

Together with his wife Traci, Jones is also a committed supporter of Riverside Foundation—giving back because he sees firsthand how philanthropy transforms care.  Whether it’s new equipment, expanded access or enhanced services, he understands the lasting impact that generosity has on patients and families.

Jones is a true example of what it means to lead with both heart and skill.  His life’s work reflects not only a commitment to clinical excellence but also a calling to serve Riverside Health and the community he proudly calls home.

Both Witt and Jones embody the very best of Riverside Health’s mission “to care for others as we would care for those we love.”  Through their vision, dedication and belief in something greater than themselves, they are reminders of what is possible when leadership meets compassion.

This year’s RemarkaBall will also feature a special celebration of Riverside Smithfield Hospital, opening January 2026.

2025 Citizen of the Year

A champion of progress across the Peninsula and the Commonwealth, Witt’s leadership has left a lasting imprint on business, education and health care.  His legacy includes more than 20 years of dedicated service on the Riverside Health Board, including 16 years as Chair.  Under his guidance, Riverside Health expanded its footprint and mission including the construction of Riverside Shore Memorial Hospital in Onancock and the development of Riverside Doctors’ Hospital Williamsburg.  He also played a key role in establishing RHS MedInsur, ensuring comprehensive protection for health care professionals, and continues to serve on its board.

Guided by a deep belief in giving back, Witt and his wife Debbie have been steadfast supporters of philanthropy.  Their shared commitment helped Riverside Foundation grow in reach and impact—ensuring that care, innovation and community support extend far beyond hospital walls.

Witt’s broader record of public service includes chairing and serving on numerous state and regional boards, guiding institutions like Christopher Newport University, TowneBank, the Virginia Chamber of Commerce and countless civic and economic development organizations.  His tireless advocacy has helped communities flourish—from education and enterprise to infrastructure and health care.

Through every role, Witt has led with integrity, humility and a deep sense of purpose.  His enduring dedication to the betterment of others reflects the very best of what it means to be a Riverside Foundation Citizen of the Year.
