The Delmarva Discovery Center in Pocomoke City will close its doors Friday, March 20, according to an announcement from Executive Director Christy Gordon.
In a message posted on Facebook, Gordon said the museum’s Board of Directors made the “difficult decision” to cease operations following ongoing financial challenges.
“This decision follows ongoing financial challenges that have made it increasingly difficult to sustain operations at an acceptable level into the foreseeable future,” Gordon said. “We know this news will be disappointing to many who care deeply about the museum and its role in our community.”
The Delmarva Discovery Center, also known as the Delmarva Discovery Museum, has served as an educational and environmental resource for the region, offering exhibits, programs, and live animal displays to visitors, students, and families.
Gordon expressed appreciation for the community’s support over the years, noting that it helped the museum reach thousands of people through its programming and exhibits.
Officials said the care and placement of the museum’s animals will be a top priority as the facility closes. Staff are working with accredited aquariums, wildlife centers, and other institutions to ensure all animals are relocated safely.
The museum’s river otters, Mac and Tuck, were specifically mentioned as part of those efforts.
“We want to reassure everyone that the well-being of our animals … remains our highest priority,” Gordon said.
