I’d like to let all my constituents know that I have been in discussion with the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation Director Matt Wells numerous times over the past week about his staff’s interaction with local beach goers on Weir Point. Matt and I have worked closely together on other projects around the state and he understands my position about allowing access to the beach. Wells will meet with his staff next week to discuss possible solutions.
We successfully navigated allowing access to the barrier islands while allowing the piping plover plenty of nesting area. I am confident we can arrive at a similar compromise to allow our families to continue enjoying Weir Point, while giving the tiger beetle plenty of habitat to thrive.
In the meantime, if you visit Weir Point this weekend, please be respectful of the beach and any Virginia employee that might visit.
