Coast Guard Appreciation Day

As a community with a deep water commercial and recreational harbor, Cape Charles is fortunate to have a U. S. Coast Guard Station located on the waterfront.  Station Cape Charles performs a variety of missions to provide safety and security for our local and visiting mariners.  The Cape Charles Yacht Club (CCYC) has traditionally hosted a reception for Coast Guard members and their families around the Coast Guard’s birthday of August 4 to thank them for their service to the community.  This year, CCYC has planned an expanded event to allow a broader segment of our citizenry to express their appreciation.

The Coast Guard plans to have several surface and air assets available at the old Ferry Dock property on the south side of Mason Avenue starting at 10:00 AM on Saturday, August 3.  A Search and Rescue Helicopter will demonstrate rescue operations in the harbor just off the dock.  An 87’ Cutter will be docked alongside for the public to tour from 10:00 AM to 12:00 PM.  A small Patrol Boat from Station Cape Charles will also be on static display.  As these are operational assets, their availability could change as requirements dictate. This will be a great opportunity to see your Coast Guard up close from the deck plates to the air.

CCYC will provide lunch to Coast Guard members and their families, and Mayor Charney will present the Town’s Proclamation of Appreciation to Chief Castillo at 12:30 PM.  Please come by to say hello and thank them for what they do!

A big thank you to Cape Charles Yacht Center managed by Oasis Experiences for use of the Ferry Dock!  Crab Slam events sponsored by The Shanty restaurant start at 1:00 PM with skiff races and boat docking practice runs, so you can make a full day of maritime activities.
