Construction on Lee Street/Cemetery Road finished

Contractor crews have substantially completed roadway rehabilitation work on the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT) Route 602 (Cemetery Road/Lee Street) Improvements Project, which crosses the Accomack and Northampton County line just south of Belle Haven. The project, designed to extend the lifespan of the roadway and improve driving conditions, is an important milestone for local transportation.

In Northampton County, the project covered approximately 1.2 miles of Route 602 (Cemetery Road), stretching from the intersection with Route 183 (Occohannock Neck Road) to the Accomack County line. Key improvements in this area included the rehabilitation of existing pavement and the flattening of the road’s cross slope to enhance safety and driving comfort.

In Accomack County, the improvements focused on 0.55 miles of Route 602 (Lee Street), extending from the Northampton County line to just east of the intersection with Route 178 (Belle Haven Road). Enhancements in this section included pavement rehabilitation, as well as upgrades to address issues with roadway width, curvature, and drainage. The addition of 4-foot-wide paved shoulders was also a key feature, providing safer conditions for bicycle riders.

The $5.5 million construction contract for the project was awarded to Branscome, Inc., which began work in November 2023. While significant portions of the project have been completed, VDOT expects full project completion by spring 2025. Remaining activities, such as seeding and final touches along the roadway, will wrap up by then.

These improvements are part of VDOT’s ongoing efforts to maintain and enhance transportation infrastructure throughout the region, ensuring safer and more efficient travel for all users.
