A 41-year-old Colorado man died after he and a woman were struck by lightning Thursday afternoon at Cape Charles Beach.

Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 3:30 p.m. Aug. 20 to the beach near Washington and Bay avenues, according to the Cape Charles Police Department.

First responders found the man in cardiac arrest and immediately began life-saving efforts. Despite those efforts, he died from his injuries.

The adult woman sustained injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

Police said the man’s identity will not be released out of respect for his family.

“The Cape Charles Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones affected by this tragic incident,” Chief James Pruitt said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time.”
