Cold weather has arrived and is expected to stick around for the next few weeks.
Temperatures dropped sharply as winds intensified last night, and northern Accomack County even experienced a rare event: snow accompanied by thunder.
Another chance for snow is predicted early Monday morning and potentially Monday afternoon. Snowfall is expected to begin after 10 p.m. Sunday night, but a warm front moving north on Monday morning could turn the snow into rain.
At this time some models show accumulating snow to be heavier in Accomack County with heavier accumulation in the northern part. A Winter Storm Watch has been issued for Accomack by the National Weather Service. It is a complicated situation and we will have more as Monday approaches.
Long-term forecasts suggest a persistent cold weather trend over the next three weeks, with high temperatures often lingering in the 30s. Looking ahead, another potential snow event is indicated for Thursday, January 17, though such predictions are far from certain.
The Eastern Shore has not seen an accumulating snowfall for the past two winters. Time will tell if the predicted cold spell will finally bring measurable snow to the region this month.
