Residents of Virginia’s Eastern Shore are urged to use caution as a Cold Weather Advisory takes effect tonight for Accomack and Northampton counties.
The National Weather Service in Wakefield has issued the advisory from 9 p.m. this evening through 10 a.m. Wednesday. Forecasters say very cold conditions combined with lingering moisture will create hazardous travel and outdoor conditions overnight into the morning commute.
Wind chills across Accomack and Northampton counties are expected to fall into the 5 to 10 degree range above zero. Officials warn that exposure to these temperatures could lead to hypothermia if proper precautions are not taken.
In addition to the cold, meteorologists caution that black ice is likely to form on area roadways late tonight and early Wednesday, particularly on untreated secondary roads, bridges, and overpasses. Drivers are urged to slow down and remain alert for slick spots that may not be visible.
Residents heading outdoors are advised to dress in layers and wear hats and gloves to protect against the cold. Travelers are encouraged to use extra caution during early morning hours as temperatures remain low and road conditions may be hazardous.
The Eastern Shore is forecast to continue to see cold weather through this weekend.
