A coastal storm is expected to continue causing flooding, strong winds and dangerous surf across Accomack and Northampton counties through Friday.
The National Weather Service in Wakefield has a Coastal Flood Warning in effect until 4 p.m. Friday, a High Surf Advisory until 7 a.m. Friday, a Wind Advisory until 8 p.m. Thursday, and a high risk of rip currents through Thursday evening.
Northeast winds of 30 to 40 mph are expected, with gusts up to 50 mph. The Weather Service said the winds could bring down tree limbs, cause scattered power outages and make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.
The greatest concern remains coastal flooding. Forecasters expect one to two feet of water above ground level in some low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. The Weather Service said flooding could close numerous roads, threaten waterfront homes and businesses and extend inland along tidal rivers and bays.
Some of the highest impacts are expected at several Eastern Shore locations. Major flooding is forecast at Nassawadox Creek at Bayford, Tangier Island and Kiptopeke, while moderate flooding is forecast at Chincoteague Inlet, Wachapreague and Oyster.
Large breaking waves of eight to 12 feet are also possible along the Atlantic beaches, with dangerous swimming conditions and a high risk of rip currents.
Residents in flood-prone areas are encouraged to protect property and avoid flooded roadways. Drivers should not go around barricades or attempt to cross water of unknown depth.
