PORTSMOUTH, Va. — The Coast Guard is searching for a missing mariner who entered the water with two other people 529 miles east of Virginia Beach, Wednesday.
Watchstanders at the Coast Guard’s 5th District command center received a report at 4:00 a.m. that motor vessel Stena Progress had diverted from its course to respond to a MAYDAY broadcast on VHF-FM channel 16 from sailing vessel In Tune.
The crew of Coast Guard Cutter Vigorous, an HC-130 Hercules aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and an HC-144 Casa aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts, were launched to respond.
Once the HC-130 Hercules aircrew arrived on scene, two of the three persons had been recovered by the Stena Progress, and the aircrew deployed a life raft into the water and commenced their search for the remaining person in the water.
The HC-144 Casa aircrew relieved the HC-130 Hercules aircrew from the search Wednesday afternoon.
