The Chincoteague Fire Department is adding a new high-tech tool to help save lives along the island’s beaches and waterways.

According to a post on the department’s Facebook page, a newly acquired rescue drone is now ready for service after undergoing extensive testing by fire department personnel.

Officials say the drone will enhance the department’s ability to locate and assist swimmers in distress, providing first responders with another resource during water-related emergencies. The technology comes as crews continue to respond to a growing number of beach rescue calls.

The drone is expected to support rescue operations for both residents and visitors enjoying Chincoteague’s shoreline and surrounding waterways.

In the Facebook post, the department described the drone as “an awesome piece of technology,” adding that crews have tested it multiple times and that it is ready to serve. Officials also called it a useful resource for anyone utilizing the beaches or waterways around the island.

The new equipment represents a significant advancement in the department’s public safety capabilities and its ongoing efforts to protect those enjoying the area’s coastal waters.
