Chincoteague has been ranked among the top 10 locations in the United States for dolphin sightings, according to a new analysis of scientific sighting data.

BoatBooker analyzed bottlenose dolphin sighting data from OBIS-SEAMAP, a peer-reviewed scientific database maintained by Duke University’s Marine Geospatial Ecology Lab in partnership with NOAA. The study reviewed 356 coastal locations across the United States and more than 243,000 documented dolphins.

Chincoteague ranked eighth nationally, with 8,972 dolphins documented across 682 sighting events.

Located on Virginia’s Eastern Shore, Chincoteague Island is bordered by the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and the protected waters surrounding Assateague Island. The area’s sheltered marine environment helps create favorable conditions for dolphin pods, which regularly feed and travel through local waters during the summer months.

“Chincoteague is best known for its wild ponies, but the dolphin data tells an equally compelling story,” said Vukan Simic, CEO of BoatBooker. “Ranking #8 in the entire U.S. puts Chincoteague firmly on the map as one of America’s top destinations for dolphin watching, and that’s a story worth telling.”

The top location in the country was Buxton, North Carolina, with 20,128 dolphins documented. Virginia Beach also ranked highly, coming in third nationwide with 15,429 dolphins.

The top 10 U.S. locations for dolphin watching, according to the analysis, were:

  1. Buxton, North Carolina — 20,128 dolphins
  2. Isle of Palms, South Carolina — 16,588 dolphins
  3. Virginia Beach, Virginia — 15,429 dolphins
  4. Folly Beach, South Carolina — 14,443 dolphins
  5. Nags Head, North Carolina — 13,292 dolphins
  6. Holmes Beach, Florida — 9,902 dolphins
  7. Montauk, New York — 9,120 dolphins
  8. Chincoteague, Virginia — 8,972 dolphins
  9. Harkers Island, North Carolina — 8,340 dolphins
  10. Nantucket, Massachusetts — 6,624 dolphins

The ranking adds another draw to Chincoteague’s reputation as a coastal destination, already known nationally for its wild ponies, wildlife refuge, beaches, boating, and natural scenery.
