Chincoteague Island will once again satisfy sweet tooths this winter as the Historic Main Street Merchants Association hosts the 20th annual “Death by Chocolate” event, scheduled for February 13–14, 2026, just ahead of Valentine’s Day.
The free, two-day event invites visitors and residents to stroll through Chincoteague’s Main Street district and participating businesses while sampling a variety of chocolate treats. Festivities will run Friday, February 13, from 3 to 7 p.m., and Saturday, February 14, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Participants can take part in a chocolate-themed scavenger hunt, collecting treats and stamps at each stop along the route. Completed cards may be entered for prize drawings featuring local merchandise, gift certificates, and unique island experiences. Organizers say the event encourages exploration of local shops while offering a fun, interactive way to enjoy the island during the winter season.
Now marking two decades, Death by Chocolate has become one of Chincoteague’s signature off-season events. Organizers say the annual celebration supports local businesses, boosts tourism during a slower time of year, and brings the community together around a simple theme—chocolate.
The event is organized by the Historic Main Street Merchants Association, which works to promote the economic vitality and character of Chincoteague’s downtown district. Additional details, including a list of participating businesses and prize information, will be announced closer to the event and posted at chincoteaguemerchants.com and on the association’s Facebook event page.
