The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce held its inaugural Beacon Awards on June 5 at the Chincoteague Center, which built on the legacy of their Annual Awards event to honor those shining a light on leadership and excellence in our community. While honoring the past, this new format expanded the number of awards presented to individuals and organizations who have made and are making significant contributions to the growth and success of our community. Light fare was catered by the Channel Bass Inn & Restaurant.

Outgoing Board Vice President, Dustin Mears, was recognized for his leadership roles on the Chamber Board over the past six years. Dustin joined the board in 2019, and immediately stepped into the leadership role of Treasurer and later Vice President during a time of growth, change, and unprecedented challenges. Through it all, he provided steady support, thoughtful insight, and a deep commitment to the mission of the Chamber and the betterment of the business community. While Dustin is stepping down from the Vice President role, he will remain an active member of the board. His continued presence ensures that the Chamber retain not only his experience but also his passion for our mission and commitment to our business community.

Past recipients of the Leonard ‘Buddy’ Burton Outstanding Business Person and John White Shields Outstanding Citizen awards were recognized, with seventy-six (76) esteemed members of our community receiving honors since the inception of the awards in 1990.

Three new Community Impact Awards – Educator of the Year, Best Initiative, and Emerging Business – were awarded celebrating the individuals, businesses, and initiatives that are making a significant difference in the community.

Cathy Jo Mason was honored as Educator of the Year for her 33 years of dedicated service at Chincoteague Elementary School. Beginning as a kindergarten teacher and later becoming the school librarian, she has inspired a love of reading through thoughtful book selections, engaging programs, and ensuring every student has access to books. Known for her warmth, positivity, and unwavering support, she has made a lasting impact both in and out of the classroom—volunteering at events, supporting teachers, and always going the extra mile. As she prepares to retire at the end of the school year, she leaves behind a remarkable legacy of compassion, commitment, and influence.

Village Neighbors of Chincoteague Island was awarded the Best Initiative Award for its outstanding work supporting Chincoteague Island residents aged 60 and over. This volunteer-led nonprofit helps seniors live independently by providing assistance with transportation, technology, and daily tasks, matching seniors with the perfect volunteer based on their skills and interests. Since launching in response to a 2021 community survey, the program has completed over 1,300 service requests for more than 70 members, achieving a 99% completion rate. By addressing the unique needs of the island’s aging population and fostering strong community connections, Village Neighbors has become a vital and compassionate resource.

Cowboy Cruise Company was awarded the Emerging Business Award for its unique and impactful contributions to tourism and community. Founded by Hunter and Rebekah Leonard, the company offers guided boat tours through local marshes, featuring rare views of wild Chincoteague ponies and hands-on aquaculture experiences like clam and salt oyster harvesting. With a strong focus on education, conservation, and local heritage, the company uses specially designed boats to connect guests with nature and the island’s traditions. Beyond tourism, the Leonards actively support the community, donating cruises and assisting local organizations, making Cowboy Cruise Company a standout new business.

Makhya Cropper was honored as Young Person of the Year as the recipient of the Nicki L. West Memorial Scholarship. While maintaining the highest academic ranking in her class, Makhya was also involved in numerous extra-curricular activities throughout her Chincoteague High School career including Scholastic Bowl, Student Government, Key Club, Beta Club, and Yearbook. She will attend Virginia Tech in the fall to pursue a major in Biology with a minor in Spanish with aspirations to become a Pediatric Physician Assistant, working in both the United States and Latin America.

The 2025 John White Shields Outstanding Citizen Award was presented to Donna Leonard for her lifelong dedication to the Chincoteague community. A native of the island, Donna has spent decades preserving its heritage while supporting its thoughtful growth. From being a teenage tour guide, to running her family business and leading key projects like the Downtown Revitalization, Brianna Kindness Park, and Island Dog Park, she has combined creativity, compassion, and persistence to shape the fabric of the town. Her leadership extends to serving on numerous boards and committees, including the Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce, Easter Decoy & Art Festival, and Town Parks and Recreation Committee. She also helped preserve the former elementary school property, now home to the Chincoteague Cultural Alliance, pickleball courts, and more. A true ambassador for Chincoteague, Donna continues to inspire future generations through her leadership and love for the island.

The 2025 Leonard “Buddy” Burton Outstanding Business Persons Award was presented to Rosie and Dylan Mööt and Kate and Nate Mööt of Pico Taqueria. Launching their journey in 2015 from the confines of a food truck, they have successfully turned a passion project into a thriving brick and mortar culinary experience, thanks to their relentless dedication, entrepreneurial spirit, and deep love for their craft. The Mööts are shining examples of outstanding business leadership who understand that success is built not just on great food, but on the strength of the team behind it. Known for their artisanal menu and warm, welcoming service, they have created a food experience that goes far beyond the plate. Every interaction is marked by genuine hospitality, attention to detail, and a desire to exceed expectations. They consistently give back to the community through their annual give back day, donating proceeds to a local non-profit, as well as provide gift cards for raffles and community fundraisers and offer complimentary meals to travel writers and journalists to help spotlight their community.

The Chincoteague Chamber of Commerce extends their congratulations to all nominees, winners, and those recognized on their accomplishments and thanks them for being pillars of our community.
