The Town of Chincoteague is preparing for the 100th Anniversary of Pony Penning Week, a cherished Eastern Shore tradition scheduled to take place from Saturday, July 26 through Friday, August 1, 2025.
The highlight of the weeklong festivities will be the world-famous Pony Swim, set for Wednesday, July 30. The annual event draws thousands of spectators as the Saltwater Cowboys guide the island’s wild ponies across the Assateague Channel to Chincoteague Island. The following day, Thursday, July 31, the traditional Pony Auction will be held, with proceeds benefiting the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company.
This year, the centennial celebration will be accompanied by enhanced security measures following a credible online threat reported earlier this year. On January 17, Chincoteague Mayor Denise Bowden and local law enforcement confirmed an online threat had been made against the 100th Pony Penning event. Although specific details were not released, reports linked the threat to a list of possible targets circulated by the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP).
In response, the Town has announced restrictions for attendees. Coolers, umbrellas, glass containers, and non-clear bags will not be allowed in event areas. Visitors may carry clear plastic bags—such as gallon-sized Ziplocs—or small clutch purses no larger than 4.5 by 6.5 inches. All bags will be subject to inspection.
Despite the heightened precautions, officials expect record attendance and are encouraging public cooperation to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. The pony swim back to Assateague Island is set for Friday, August 1.
Volunteers are still needed to assist with shuttle operations throughout the week. Event schedules, transportation details, and volunteer registration are available at www.chincoteague.gov.
